MUSIC: “Bobby Torres Ensemble”

From Willamette Week, 12/12/07:

Conga maestro Bobby Torres is a little bit like the Ghostbusters — internationally renowned, but still modest enough to do a birthday party every once in a while. Torres is a Swingline staple of the Portland jazz community, and the reflection of the stage light off his shiny forehead should be a pretty familiar sight for anyone who’s ever heard live jazz in this town. His music now is a departure from his days performing at Woodstock and the Fillmore East in the late ’60s and ’70s, with guys like Jackson Browne, Dr. John and Joe Cocker, but Torres’ Latin-infused compositions are still bright, tight and highly danceable with the right pair of samba shoes. Playing Saturday, Dec. 15, at Jimmy Mak’s, 221 NW 10th Ave., 503-295-6542.
